Reps Schedule Emergency Sitting Over INEC’s 2027 Election Timetable

The House of Representatives has fixed Tuesday, February 17, 2026, for an emergency sitting to deliberate on issues arising from the newly released 2027 general election timetable announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement issued by the House spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the lawmakers described INEC’s timetable as having “constitutional and national significance,” especially the decision to hold the Presidential and National Assembly elections on February 20, 2027.

Emergency Session Notification

Rotimi disclosed that members were informed through an internal memo from the Speaker’s office, and lawmakers are expected to treat the sitting with urgency.

He urged all members to prioritize attendance, given the importance of the subject to Nigeria’s democratic process.

What INEC Timetable Includes

According to the statement, the House will also consider legislative matters connected to:

  • Party primaries (July – September 2026)
  • Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) starting April 2026
  • Possible amendments to the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 polls

The emergency sitting comes amid ongoing national discussions about strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process before the next general election.
