French football star Kylian Mbappé has lost sponsorship deals with two major Chinese companies following the circulation of a video in which he appeared to make a joke about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong.
The Real Madrid forward, 27, reportedly lost his partnerships with Dongpeng, a major Chinese drinks company, and Mengniu, the country’s largest dairy producer, after his remarks sparked criticism in China.
In the video, Mbappé reportedly described an internet meme he found funny, explaining that someone had edited his face onto the image of a man he believed was a Chinese dictator. The footage drew attention because it appeared to reference Mao Zedong, the founding leader of the People’s Republic of China, who died in 1976.
Mao remains a highly sensitive historical figure in China, where jokes perceived as disrespectful towards him can provoke strong public reactions. The controversy surrounding the video has now resulted in the termination of Mbappé’s commercial partnerships with the two companies.
Dongpeng announced its decision in a statement, saying it would not tolerate behaviour considered offensive to Chinese national sentiment.
The company confirmed that it was ending all cooperation with the France international with immediate effect.
Mengniu also announced the termination of its relationship with the footballer, citing similar concerns about remarks or actions that could hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.
The decisions represent a commercial setback for Mbappé, one of the most recognisable figures in world football, whose international profile has made him an attractive partner for major brands seeking to reach football fans.
Meanwhile, Dongqiudi, one of China’s leading online football platforms, criticised the reported remarks in a statement issued on Monday evening.
The outlet described the comments as offensive to China and its people, adding that they had hurt the feelings of Chinese football supporters.
Mbappé, who plays for Spanish giants Real Madrid and represents the France national team, has built a global commercial profile through his performances and endorsement agreements.
The latest controversy highlights the potential consequences international sports stars can face when their public comments clash with the cultural and political sensitivities of major markets such as China.
