Afrobeats superstar Davido has responded to criticism from APC supporter and singer Dauda Kahutu Rarara, insisting that speaking out against insecurity is a patriotic duty and should never be reduced to politics.
The disagreement began after Davido appeared at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles wearing a customised jacket bearing the names of abducted pupils and teachers from Oyo State, alongside the message, “Bring Them Home.”
The gesture drew widespread praise from many Nigerians, who viewed it as an attempt to use his global platform to raise awareness about the plight of the victims and their families.
However, Rarara criticised the move, arguing that taking Nigeria’s security challenges to an international audience could damage the country’s image and complicate efforts to secure the release of those still in captivity.
The singer further suggested that Davido’s actions may have been politically motivated.
Davido initially reacted with a brief social media post dismissing Rarara’s comments, but later issued a more detailed response defending his decision to speak up.
According to the award-winning musician, concern for the safety of innocent Nigerians should never be viewed through a political lens.
He argued that remaining silent while citizens continue to suffer from insecurity would be irresponsible.
“Damn it, every Nigerian should not stay silent about the insecurity plaguing the nation, nor should they prevent others from voicing their concerns openly,” Davido wrote.
The singer also criticised what he described as the tendency of some individuals to place political loyalty above the welfare of citizens.
“Showing bias and prioritizing personal or political interests, and putting personal desires above the community’s goals, is nothing to be proud of.”
Davido went on to urge Nigerians to prioritise truth, patriotism and the collective good of the country.
“Be a patriot for your country, stop prioritizing politics over the truth, and fear God in everything you do,” he added while directly addressing Rarara.
The exchange has generated intense debate on social media, with supporters of both figures sharing differing opinions on the role celebrities should play in drawing attention to national issues.
Many Nigerians have backed Davido’s position, arguing that raising awareness about the plight of abducted children and teachers is a humanitarian concern rather than a political statement.
