The House of Representatives is set to hold a decisive vote on a constitutional amendment bill aimed at legalizing state and local government policing structures to combat Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu, announced the legislative move while addressing journalists at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.
Kalu, who heads the House Committee on Constitution Review, revealed that leadership has fast-tracked the state police legislation, giving it priority over all other pending constitutional amendment bills.
To ensure maximum attendance for the high-stakes session, the house leadership directed all lawmakers currently on official oversight assignments outside the Federal Capital Territory to immediately halt their engagements and return to parliament.
The mandatory plenary session and voting process are scheduled for Thursday, June 11, 2026.
The proposed legislation, which seeks to decentralize the current federal policing system, is jointly sponsored by Deputy Speaker Kalu alongside 14 other influential lawmakers. The move comes amid growing pressure from regional socio-political groups and state governors who argue that sub-national security outfits are necessary to effectively secure communities across the country.
