A High Court in Wa, Upper West Region of Ghana, has sentenced a 42-year-old man, Elyasu Kunateh, to 10 years in prison with hard labour after finding him guilty of sexually abusing a seven-year-old boy.
The conviction followed an investigation conducted by the Upper West Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service.
According to a statement released by the Ghana Police Service on Sunday, July 26, 2026, the case was reported by the child’s mother on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. She informed authorities that the incident had taken place three days earlier, on Saturday, January 17.
Following the complaint, investigators immediately commenced inquiries into the case. The young victim was taken to a medical facility for examination and also received psychosocial support as part of efforts to safeguard his wellbeing during the investigation.
Kunateh was later charged and brought before the Wa High Court, where he was remanded in police custody while the trial progressed.
After considering the evidence presented during the proceedings, the court, presided over by Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi, delivered its judgment on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The judge found the defendant guilty and imposed a 10-year prison sentence with hard labour.
Reacting to the judgment, the Upper West Regional Police Command reiterated its determination to protect children and other vulnerable members of society. The Command said it would continue to investigate and prosecute cases involving child abuse, sexual offences and gender-based violence.
The police also appealed to parents, guardians, caregivers and members of the public to remain alert and promptly report suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police station to enable swift intervention and justice for victims.
