Makinde Begins Annual Leave August 10, Deputy Governor To Take Charge

The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to proceed on his annual leave, with Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal set to oversee the affairs of the state during the governor’s absence.

The approval was granted during plenary on Thursday after lawmakers considered a formal letter from the governor notifying the Assembly of his planned vacation, in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which requires a governor to inform the legislature before proceeding on leave or being absent from office.

Governor Makinde informed the House that his annual leave will commence on August 10, 2026, and end on September 11, 2026, while he is expected to resume official duties on September 14, 2026.

The governor also requested that the Assembly authorise Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal to act on his behalf throughout the period of his absence.

The governor’s letter was read during the plenary by Deputy Speaker Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin.

After deliberating on the request, the lawmakers unanimously granted the approval and expressed confidence in the deputy governor’s ability to provide effective leadership and ensure the smooth running of government during the period.

With the Assembly’s approval, Bayo Lawal will serve as Acting Governor, overseeing the day-to-day administration of Oyo State until Governor Makinde returns to office.

Speaking after the approval, Deputy Speaker Fadeyi wished Governor Makinde a restful and refreshing leave and reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to maintaining a cordial working relationship with the executive arm of government in the interest of the people of Oyo State.

He also expressed confidence that the deputy governor would sustain governance and ensure continuity in the implementation of government policies until the governor resumes duty.
