Ibadan – The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, has cautioned residents of the ancient city to avoid any actions that could trigger ethnic unrest.
The traditional ruler, a former governor of Oyo State, stressed that all inhabitants of Ibadan must coexist peacefully regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, or religious background.
Oba Ladoja issued the warning in response to the recent violent clash between Yoruba and Hausa groups in the Ojoo area of the city. The unrest reportedly began on Tuesday night following the alleged killing of a Yoruba commercial motorcyclist and escalated on Wednesday when youths from both communities confronted each other, resulting in at least one additional death.
Describing the incident as unfortunate and sad, the monarch called on all residents to maintain harmony. In a statement signed by his Media Aide, Chief Adeola Oloko, and made available on Wednesday, Oba Ladoja emphasised the importance of peaceful coexistence.
“Regardless of where we come from, we should continue to see ourselves as brothers and sisters,” the statement quoted him as saying. He noted that many Nigerians from diverse backgrounds have come to regard Ibadan as their home.
The Olubadan’s intervention comes as security agencies work to restore normalcy in the affected area and prevent further escalation. Residents have been urged to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
