Miss Abolarin Tomisin, a 300-level Law student of the University of Ibadan (UI), has been released alongside seven other victims after spending 22 days in captivity following their abduction in Imo State.
The President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, Temidayo Adeboye, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday, saying the release had been verified by the appropriate authorities and representatives of the organisation involved.
According to Adeboye, all eight victims are currently undergoing post-release procedures before returning to their various destinations.
He expressed optimism that Tomisin would soon reunite with the University of Ibadan community.
The Students’ Union president also praised security agencies, the management of the University of Ibadan, the leadership of Scripture Union Nigeria, and everyone whose efforts contributed to securing the victims’ freedom.
He further thanked members of the university community for their prayers, patience, support and solidarity throughout the period of the student’s captivity.
Adeboye prayed for the full recovery and well-being of all those affected by the incident, describing their safe return as a source of gratitude.
The victims, including the Director-General of Scripture Union Nigeria, Uwem Cosmas, were kidnapped on June 14, 2026, while returning from the Scripture Union National Conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State.
They were reportedly abducted along the Imo-Anambra boundary while travelling from the conference.
Earlier, Adeboye had explained that Tomisin, who serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship and Vice-President of the University of Ibadan chapter, was travelling with the organisation’s National General Director and other delegates when the incident occurred.
He also clarified that contrary to reports circulating on social media, Tomisin was the only University of Ibadan student among those abducted.
Following their release, a video shared online showed the victims participating in emotional praise, worship and thanksgiving sessions as they celebrated their freedom after more than three weeks in captivity.
