Court Dismisses Emeka Ike’s ₦10bn Suit Against INEC, Wike’s Aide

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a ₦10 billion damages suit filed by Nollywood actor Emeka Ike against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Lere Olayinka, an aide to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

The court dismissed the suit on Wednesday after ruling that the actor had failed to establish his claims against the defendants with credible evidence.

Ike had approached the court seeking ₦10 billion in damages over the alleged publication of his personal data in INEC’s database, arguing that the actions of the electoral commission and Olayinka had caused him hardship.

In his suit, the actor asked the court to declare the defendants’ alleged actions illegal and unconstitutional. He also sought financial compensation for the harm he claimed to have suffered.

Delivering judgment, Justice Salim Ibrahim held that Ike had not sufficiently demonstrated how the defendants violated his rights or established the basis for the substantial damages he sought.

The judge consequently dismissed the case, ruling that the plaintiff’s claims lacked sufficient evidential support.

The decision represents a legal victory for INEC and Olayinka, who had been named as defendants in the suit.

The court did not award costs to either side. However, Justice Ibrahim reportedly cautioned against filing frivolous cases that consume judicial time and resources.

The dismissal means Ike’s claims were unsuccessful at the trial court. The ruling, as reported, does not establish that every aspect of his concerns about the handling of personal data was unfounded; rather, the court found that he had not proved the case presented before it.

Further details about the suit, including its case number and whether Ike intends to appeal the judgment, were not provided in the available report.
