Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is planning to freeze the bank accounts of the Osun State Government ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Osogbo by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, on behalf of the governor.
According to the statement, the state government received what it described as credible intelligence suggesting that the anti-graft agency had concluded plans to freeze all government-owned bank accounts.
The governor also alleged that the proposed action would extend to the personal accounts of top government officials, warning that such a move could disrupt the day-to-day operations of the state government just days before residents head to the polls.
Adeleke alleges move aimed at disrupting government
Reacting to the development, Adeleke described the alleged plan as unlawful and without legal justification.
“The state government received credible reports that the anti-graft agency had concluded plans to freeze all Osun State Government accounts.”
He further stated:
“Any attempt to freeze the state’s accounts would be aimed at paralysing government activities before residents go to the polls on August 15.”
The governor argued that the EFCC lacks the constitutional authority to freeze the accounts of a state government, insisting that any such action would amount to an abuse of power.
“There is no legal basis or justification for any push to freeze the state government accounts. The anti-graft agency has no legal powers to freeze the account of a state government.”
Adeleke warned that the reported move, if implemented, could affect governance and the delivery of essential public services during a crucial period in the state.
