The Federal Government has approved a significant salary increase for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with President Bola Tinubu authorising pay rises ranging from 30 to 80 per cent across different military ranks.
The revised salary structure is scheduled to take effect from September 1, 2026, and is expected to benefit approximately 250,000 serving military personnel.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Junior personnel to receive highest increase
Under the new salary structure, lower-ranking personnel will receive the largest percentage increase.
According to the approved breakdown:
- Personnel from the rank of General to Colonel will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
- Officers between Colonel and Warrant Officer will benefit from a 50 per cent increase.
- Personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 per cent increase.
The adjustment will raise the Armed Forces’ annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing an additional ₦264 billion in yearly personnel costs.
Tinubu highlights troop welfare
President Tinubu said the salary review reflects his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel serving across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation.”
The President also pledged to continue investing in the operational capacity of the Armed Forces through improved equipment and modern technology.
“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties.”
He stressed that national development depends on a secure environment, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians.”
Tinubu urged members of the Armed Forces to view the salary review as a demonstration of the nation’s appreciation for their sacrifices.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation.”
