The Lagos State Government has arrested a middle-aged man for allegedly vandalising a concrete barrier installed to prevent pedestrians from crossing an expressway.
The suspect was apprehended at Kosofe Bus Stop, Mile 12, during a monitoring and enforcement operation carried out by state officials.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the arrest, saying the suspect was allegedly caught deliberately removing components from the barrier.
According to Wahab, items targeted included iron rods, cables, steel reinforcements and other structural componentsdesigned to maintain the stability and effectiveness of the concrete barrier.
The barrier forms part of measures introduced by the state government to discourage pedestrians from crossing expressways at unsafe locations and encourage the use of designated pedestrian facilities.
Wahab condemned the alleged vandalism, stressing that damaging public infrastructure compromises government investments and could create safety risks for residents.
The commissioner said the suspect would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The arrest comes amid increased attention on the vandalism of public infrastructure across Lagos State, with the government intensifying enforcement against individuals suspected of damaging or stealing components from publicly funded facilities.
The state government has repeatedly urged residents to protect public infrastructure and report acts of vandalism to the appropriate authorities.
