The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old Nigerian Law School student, Faith Ajoke Alayande, following an incident at the institution’s hostel in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 7, 2026, after Alayande was reportedly found unresponsive within the hostel premises.
According to information attributed to security analyst Zagazola Makama, another student discovered Alayande and alerted the Chief Matron of the Nigerian Law School.
The matron subsequently proceeded to the scene and reportedly found the student lying on the ground within the hostel premises before reporting the incident to the Victoria Island Police Division at about 6:30am.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, said preliminary information available to investigators indicated that Alayande had allegedly jumped from the rooftop of the four-storey hostel building.
According to Adebisi, a hostel mate and one of Alayande’s relatives reportedly found a note believed to have been written by the deceased and began searching for her.
“I can confirm the incident. The deceased reportedly wrote a suicide note and, before her hostel mate and a relative could locate her, she jumped from the rooftop of a four-storey building,” Adebisi said.
The police spokesperson said officers were subsequently deployed to the scene following a report from the hostel matron.
“The matron of the hostel reported the incident, prompting police operatives to visit the scene. Her body has been evacuated to a morgue for preservation.”
Adebisi added that the police had commenced an investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding Alayande’s death.
Meanwhile, a man identified as Uchenna Marvin, who said he supervised Alayande’s academic research during her university education, expressed sadness over her death.
According to Marvin, Alayande had graduated from university before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School in 2026.
He also recalled academic discussions he had with her while teaching Medical Law, including debates surrounding the concept of the “right to die.”
Marvin described her death as heartbreaking and lamented the loss of his former student.
The circumstances surrounding Alayande’s death remain under investigation, with the Lagos State Police Command yet to announce any final findings.
