The Super Falcons returned to winning ways at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Zambia on Saturday, bouncing back from their surprise defeat to Malawi.
The defending champions secured a crucial three points in Group C thanks to an early goal from captain Asisat Oshoala.
Oshoala broke the deadlock in the eighth minute, giving Justin Madugu’s side the perfect start before the match took another twist as Nigeria were reduced to 10 players before the half time break.
Despite playing the entire second half with a numerical disadvantage, the Super Falcons held firm to protect their lead and secure a vital win in their bid to qualify for the knockout stage.
The victory keeps Nigeria’s hopes of retaining the WAFCON title alive after the disappointing loss to Malawi in their previous outing.
The Super Falcons must now defeat Egypt in their final Group C fixture to guarantee qualification for the quarterfinals.
