Veteran Nollywood Actor Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ Dies at 66 After Cancer Battle

Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer.

His death was announced by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an Instagram Live session on Sunday, August 23, according to QED. Other Nigerian media outlets have also reported his death.

The development comes only days after Ogogo’s daughters, Lima and Kira, publicly appealed for urgent medical assistance for their father after revealing that he was battling advanced cancer.

The family had initially appealed for help in finding medical specialists and facilities capable of treating the veteran actor. They said their priority was medical assistance rather than financial donations.

Ogogo’s health condition had generated widespread concern across the Yoruba film industry, with colleagues and well-wishers rallying around the family. Several prominent Yoruba actors and filmmakers gathered in Lagos on Friday for a prayer session for the actor as he battled the illness.

His family had also previously dismissed reports claiming that he had died. On August 18, his daughter Lima described the reports as false and urged members of the public to disregard them.

Ogogo was one of the prominent figures in Yoruba-language cinema, with a career spanning several decades. He became widely recognised for his roles in Nigerian films and established himself as one of the respected veterans of the Yoruba movie industry.

His death marks the loss of one of Nollywood’s veteran performers and has already triggered an outpouring of condolences from colleagues, fans and members of the entertainment community.
