Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has announced that it is shutting down its existing Creator Revenue Sharing programme and replacing it with a new monetisation system focused on original content.
The Elon Musk-owned platform said applications to the existing revenue-sharing programme closed on August 7, while eligible creators will receive final payments covering earnings generated through September 7.
The outgoing programme allowed qualified creators to earn money based on engagement generated by their content on X, subject to the platform’s eligibility and Premium subscription requirements.
According to X, the decision to overhaul the system followed concerns that the existing incentive structure encouraged some creators to repost or repurpose material rather than invest in producing original content.
Allegra Jacchia, X’s head of creators, said the company would replace the system with a new programme called Original Content Rewards, designed to place greater emphasis on original work.
Under the new model, eligible creators will earn based on qualified impressions generated by their original posts. X said payouts will be issued every two weeks as long as creators and their content continue to satisfy the programme’s requirements.
Content that may qualify includes original reporting, videos, threads, memes, analysis, commentary, reactions, photographs, graphics and illustrations.
X said creators may also earn from material based on existing content when they significantly transform it through original analysis, narration, humour, editing or other creative contributions.
The company said the changes are intended to reward creators who contribute their own ideas, expertise and creativity to conversations taking place on the platform.
For now, access to Original Content Rewards is limited to creators who are already enrolled in X’s existing revenue-sharing programme.
Under the stated eligibility requirements, creators must be at least 18 years old, reside in an eligible country, operate a Personal or Business account and maintain a qualifying X Premium subscription.
They must also have at least 500 verified followers and generate a minimum of 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within 90 days.
Applications for the new programme can be submitted through Creator Studio. X said unsuccessful applicants will be allowed one appeal and may submit another application after 90 days if they continue to satisfy the eligibility requirements.
The transition will result in the old and new monetisation systems briefly overlapping.
X said the first payout under Original Content Rewards is scheduled for August 28, while the final payment under the outgoing revenue-sharing programme will cover eligible earnings generated through September 7.
Creators who enrol in the new programme from September 8 are expected to receive their first payout on September 25.
The overhaul represents a significant change to how creators earn money on X, shifting the platform’s monetisation strategy towards rewarding original material rather than engagement alone.
