Four people have been killed in a fatal road crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
The crash occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, around Straight Gate School, Ipara Remo, along the Ibadan-Lagos route.
Two vehicles were involved in the crash, a blue Mitsubishi Canter with registration number FGE 753 XA and an ash-coloured HOWO truck with registration number T-695 KT.
According to the FRSC, eight people were involved in the crash. Four male adults died, one male adult sustained injuries, while three others escaped unhurt.
The Ogun State Sector Command spokesperson, Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, said preliminary investigation indicated that speeding and wrongful overtaking were responsible for the crash, with driver fatigue also identified as a contributing factor.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the crash was caused by speed violation (SPV) and wrong overtaking (WOV). The Mitsubishi driver, reportedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the moving truck while attempting to overtake.”
Odunsi added that the driver was reportedly fatigued during the journey, which may have further contributed to the incident.
The FRSC said its rescue team received information about the crash at 4:33 a.m. and arrived at the scene at 4:39 a.m., recording a six-minute response time.
The injured victim was taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical treatment, while the bodies of the four deceased victims were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara.
The two vehicles involved were subsequently handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara Division, for further investigation and necessary action.
Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to avoid speeding, driving while fatigued and dangerous overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys.
He advised motorists embarking on long-distance trips to get adequate rest before driving and to overtake only when road conditions make it safe and permissible.
The FRSC continues to urge motorists to exercise caution on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, particularly during periods of reduced visibility and early-morning travel.
