The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has opened its public offer, giving eligible investors an opportunity to become shareholders in one of Nigeria’s biggest industrial projects.
The development has generated significant interest among Nigerians, particularly retail investors. Investment platforms including Bamboo and Cowrywise reported unusually heavy traffic when the offer opened, with the platforms experiencing disruptions as users attempted to participate.
But with many Nigerians still asking how the offer works, here are the key things to know before putting money into the shares.
How much does it cost to buy Dangote Refinery shares?
The shares are being offered at ₦525 each.
The minimum subscription is 10 shares, meaning an eligible investor can start with ₦5,250.
The public offer consists of 4.1 billion ordinary shares and is targeting approximately ₦2.15 trillion in proceeds.
When does the IPO close?
The offer opened on September 14, 2026, and is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026.
After the offer closes, applications will be processed and shares allotted according to the terms of the offer. The official Dangote IPO information states that the listing date is yet to be confirmed.
What happens if you buy the shares?
If your application is successful and the shares are allotted to you, you become a shareholder in Dangote Petroleum Refinery.
That does not mean your investment is guaranteed to increase in value.
The official IPO information warns that share prices can rise or fall after listing and that investors could lose some or all of the money they invest. Dividends are also not guaranteed and depend on the company’s performance, cash requirements and decisions of its board.
There is also a retail investor incentive
Eligible retail investors who subscribe for at least 10 shares and continuously hold them for 12 months can receive one additional share for every 10 shares held, subject to the offer terms.
Investors who continue holding their qualifying shares for another 12 months can receive another additional share, potentially giving eligible investors up to two additional shares over two years.
The incentive applies to eligible investors who subscribe through the public offer; buying shares later on the secondary market does not qualify for the additional shares under the programme.
What will the money raised be used for?
The refinery plans to use proceeds from the offer to support its expansion programme, including increasing its production capacity from 700,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day and developing additional petrochemical facilities.
How can Nigerians subscribe?
Investors should use only the SEC-approved receiving agents and electronic application channels listed through the official IPO information.
The official Dangote IPO website also warns investors not to send money to individuals or give anyone their PIN, password or OTP.

So, is buying the shares a good idea?
That is ultimately an individual investment decision. The important point is that ₦5,250 is the minimum entry amount, not a guarantee of profit.
Anyone considering the offer should read the prospectus, understand the risks and consider getting professional financial advice if they are unsure. The official IPO information specifically advises investors to read the prospectus before subscribing.
