Jose Mourinho suffered his first defeat since returning to Real Madrid after Los Blancos were beaten 1-0 by Real Betisin LaLiga on Friday.
Madrid entered the fixture with a perfect start to the campaign, having won their opening three league matches under Mourinho.
However, the visitors struggled to create clear-cut opportunities as Betis defended resolutely and frustrated the Spanish giants for much of the encounter.
The home side eventually broke the deadlock in the 81st minute, with Troy Parrott finding the decisive goal to put Betis ahead.
Madrid were handed a late opportunity to rescue a point after Vinicius Junior was fouled inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to award a spot-kick.
Kylian Mbappe stepped up to take the penalty but saw his effort saved by Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles, who denied Madrid a share of the points.
The defeat ended Mourinho’s perfect start since his return to the Santiago Bernabéu and handed Betis a notable victory over the Spanish giants.
The result also extended Real Madrid’s difficult run at the Benito Villamarín, with Los Blancos still without a victory at Betis since 2021.
