Two people have been killed and four others injured in a suspected clash involving rival cult groups in Osogbo, Osun State.
The incident occurred around 5pm on Friday at a lounge in Owoeba, along the Osogbo-Ilesa Road.
According to residents, the victims were at the lounge when some yet-to-be-identified assailants arrived and attacked them.
A resident of Owoeba, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said gunshots and fighting were heard in the area.
“We heard gunshots and noise in the afternoon. The deceased was with some people drinking when the assailants arrived. They were in a lounge.”
The resident said the attackers engaged the victims in a fight before two of them were eventually subdued.
One of the victims was reportedly hit on the head and died at the scene, while another was shot.
One of the deceased was identified by residents as “Small Rugged”, although his other names were not immediately known.
“We are all very scared but we later saw police van that came to the joint to park the two bodies,” the resident said.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the killings.
The command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the incident was suspected to have been carried out by cult groups around the Oke Baale area of Osogbo.
“The command is aware of a shooting incident suspected to have been perpetrated by cult groups around Oke Baale Area Osogbo.”
Ojelabi confirmed that two people died at the scene, while four others sustained gunshot injuries.
He said the injured victims were taken by police officers to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The police spokesperson also confirmed the identity of one of the deceased as Small Rugged, adding that his other names were not yet known.
The Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, has directed tactical teams to move into the area and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
“The CP has directed tactical teams to move out to apprehend those behind this nefarious act.”
A police van conveying the two bodies was also observed along Station Road, Osogbo, on Friday evening.
The identities of the four injured victims and the circumstances that led to the reported clash had not been fully established as of the time of filing the report.
Police operations are ongoing to identify and arrest the suspected perpetrators.
