Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck, whose real name is Tochukwu Ojogwu, has suggested that some artistes in the Nigerian music industry resort to traditional spiritual practices in their quest to produce hit songs.
The rapper made the remark during an appearance on the Tea With Tay podcast, where he discussed the challenges artistes face in making commercially successful music.
According to Odumodublvck, producing a hit song is far from easy, adding that some musicians can spend their entire careers without recording a song that achieves significant commercial success.
He suggested that the pressure to secure a hit record sometimes pushes artistes towards practices popularly described as jazz.
“Getting a hit song is not easy. Sometimes people even do jazz to get one. That is why you see some artistes crashing out when they struggle to get a hit,” he said.
The rapper also singled out Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido, praising their ability to release commercially successful songs consistently over several years.
“You have to respect that. Some artistes never get a hit song throughout their careers,” he added.
His comments have drawn attention to the intense competition within Nigeria’s music industry, where commercial success, streaming numbers and chart performance often influence an artiste’s popularity and career prospects.
However, Odumodublvck did not identify any musician allegedly involved in the practices he described or provide evidence to support the claim. His remarks should therefore be understood as his personal observation rather than an established account of what happens across the industry.
