Oyo Teachers Suspend Strike After Government Promises Stronger School Security, Classes Resume July 2

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called off the strike that halted teaching activities in public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State, following renewed commitments from the state government to improve security in and around schools.

The decision, announced on Wednesday, means teachers are expected to return to their classrooms on Thursday, July 2, 2026, bringing an end to weeks of disruption in the state’s public education system.

In a statement jointly signed by the Oyo State NUT Chairman, Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and the union’s Secretary, Olukayode Salami, the union said the suspension of the industrial action was approved after its national leadership reviewed the security situation and considered appeals made by the Oyo State Government and other stakeholders.

According to the union, the move was made in the best interest of teachers, pupils, students and the wider public after receiving assurances that the government was taking concrete steps to improve security and secure the release of teachers and learners who were abducted.

The state government reportedly pledged to strengthen efforts to rescue the kidnapped victims while introducing additional security measures to safeguard schools and nearby communities.

Among the promises made by the government is the establishment of a properly equipped Joint Security Task Force that will patrol schools considered vulnerable, as well as major access roads leading to educational institutions.

The government also assured the union that it would continue to engage with the families of those abducted, provide psychosocial care and rehabilitation for victims who are rescued, and settle gratuities and other outstanding benefits owed to the families of teachers who lost their lives.

The suspension of the strike is expected to restore normal academic activities across public schools in Oyo State, with teachers set to resume work immediately as authorities begin implementing the agreed security measures.
