Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy has made history after becoming the African artist with the highest number of monthly listeners ever recorded on Spotify.
The Grammy-winning singer surpassed the previous all-time African record of 46.58 million monthly listeners, which was held by South African sensation Tyla, climbing to an impressive 47.3 million monthly listeners.
The latest milestone makes Burna Boy the most-streamed African artist in Spotify history based on monthly listeners.
His record-breaking surge has been largely fueled by the global success of his FIFA World Cup collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira, titled “Dai Dai.”
The song recently climbed to No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart, making Burna Boy the first African artist to top the global chart since Wizkid achieved the feat through his collaboration with Drake on the global hit “One Dance” in 2016.
With his current streaming momentum, Burna Boy is now on course to become the first African artist in history to reach 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify, another milestone that would further cement his place among the world’s biggest music stars.
Announcing the achievement, the World Music Awards wrote:
“Burna Boy breaks the all-time Record as the African Artist with the Most Monthly Listeners in Spotify history (46.84M), surpassing Tyla (46.5M)! 💪🦍🐐👑❤️🔥”
The latest feat adds to Burna Boy’s growing list of international achievements as he continues to expand the global reach of Afrobeats.
