Ghanaian rap superstar has strongly condemned the latest wave of xenophobic attacks in after reports emerged that a Ghanaian citizen was shot dead during violence reportedly directed at foreign nationals.
The award-winning musician reacted on social media, describing the attacks as disturbing and calling on South Africans to publicly reject acts of violence against migrants.
Expressing his disappointment, Sarkodie said South Africa remains one of his favourite destinations but stressed that the ongoing attacks were unacceptable.
He wrote that although he believes many South Africans are not involved in the violence, the situation has become alarming and unjustifiable.
The rapper also appealed to citizens of South Africa to take a stronger stand against xenophobia, warning that the attacks were becoming increasingly serious. He offered prayers for Africans affected by the violence and urged greater solidarity across the continent.
Sarkodie’s comments come as concerns continue to grow over the safety of foreign nationals living in South Africa. In recent days, reports of attacks on migrants and businesses owned by foreigners have resurfaced, while videos circulating on social media have shown groups allegedly targeting non-South African residents in some communities.
The reported killing of the Ghanaian national has sparked widespread outrage among Ghanaians both at home and abroad, with many demanding that South African authorities take urgent steps to protect everyone living in the country, regardless of nationality.
The Government of Ghana has previously stated that it closely monitors the welfare of its citizens residing in South Africa. During previous outbreaks of xenophobic violence, Ghanaian officials engaged with South African authorities to address security concerns.
Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Pretoria has also advised Ghanaians living in South Africa to remain vigilant, follow security guidance and cooperate with law enforcement agencies whenever tensions rise.
South Africa has witnessed several episodes of xenophobic violence over the past two decades. Migrants from countries including , , , , and have frequently been among those affected.
Past attacks have resulted in deaths, injuries and the destruction of homes and businesses, prompting condemnation from governments and regional leaders while renewing calls for stronger efforts to combat xenophobia and promote African unity.
