Suspected gunmen have reportedly killed three members of a local vigilante group during a late-night attack on Sabon-Layi community in Gwol District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack, which reportedly occurred at about 10 p.m. on Saturday, has heightened fears over the worsening security situation in communities across the area.
According to reports, the attackers stormed the community under the cover of darkness and specifically targeted vigilante members who were on duty protecting residents.
The spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident, describing the killings as a direct assault on local efforts to defend communities from recurring attacks.
According to him, the slain men were members of a community security outfit established to protect residents and safeguard lives and property.
“The attackers came and killed these men who were risking their lives to safeguard the community,” Tengwong said.
He expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Barkin Ladi, noting that residents continue to live in fear despite the presence of security personnel in the area.
Tengwong called on both the Plateau State Government and the Federal Government to urgently strengthen security by deploying additional personnel to vulnerable communities to prevent further attacks.
The latest incident adds to the growing wave of violent attacks in parts of Plateau State, where several communities have experienced recurring killings and security challenges in recent months.
