A 28-year-old Ghanaian man, Bismark Aduah, has been sentenced to prison after he admitted to breaking into his girlfriend’s mother’s room in an attempt to recover items he claimed to have purchased during their relationship.
Aduah, who is currently being held at the Winneba Local Prison in Ghana, shared details of the incident during an interview with Crime Check.
According to him, he had been in a relationship with his girlfriend, Rebecca, for nine years, and the couple had lived together in Ashaiman for the last two years.
He alleged that Rebecca’s mother consistently opposed their relationship and never accepted him as her daughter’s partner.
Aduah explained that following disagreements with the family, he and Rebecca returned to her mother’s house to retrieve belongings he said he had bought for his girlfriend during the course of their relationship.
He admitted that they forced their way into the room by breaking the door and its lock before removing the items. The belongings were later taken to Rebecca’s father’s residence.
The incident prompted Rebecca’s mother to file a complaint with the authorities, leading to the arrest and prosecution of both Aduah and his girlfriend.
An Afransi Court found Aduah guilty and sentenced him to five months in prison. The court also imposed a GH¢1,560 fine, which he said he has been unable to pay after spending two weeks behind bars.
Rebecca received a lighter sentence of one month and two weeks’ imprisonment. Aduah disclosed that he paid the fine imposed on her, securing her release from custody.
The case highlights the legal consequences of taking property disputes into one’s own hands, even where the items involved are claimed to have been purchased by one of the parties.
