Two people have died while two others are receiving treatment after allegedly consuming a substance suspected to be “laughing gas” in Oke-Ola Phase II, Isara-Remo area of Ogun State, according to the police.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident on Thursday, saying an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the suspected drug-related case.
A resident of the community, who spoke anonymously, alleged that four individuals believed to be students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, consumed the substance on Tuesday.
According to the source, two of the victims reportedly died after taking the suspected hard drug, while the other two were rushed to hospital for treatment.
“What we learnt was that the students were taking what they called laughing gas. Two of the students died as a result of taking the hard drug, while two others were hospitalised,” the resident said.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the command is investigating the case.
“The Ogun State Police Command is investigating a suspected drug-related incident where two persons were found dead and two others were hospitalised after allegedly consuming hard drugs,” he said.
Babaseyi added that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited in a morgue for autopsy, while the survivors are currently receiving medical treatment.
He also urged members of the public to stay away from illicit substances, warning about the dangers associated with drug abuse.
The police spokesperson noted that the command has not confirmed whether the victims were students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, as investigations are still ongoing.
Efforts to obtain a response from the management of Gateway ICT Polytechnic were unsuccessful, as repeated calls to the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Folorunso Adedayo, were not answered.
