Atiku Denies Reports of Withdrawing From 2027 Presidential Race

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports claiming he has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential contest, describing the claims as false and misleading.

Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, was reported in some quarters to have stepped aside in favour of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 flagbearer. The reports further alleged that Atiku had agreed to support a one-term presidency for Obi in the interest of regional balance.

Media Adviser Reacts

Responding to the claims, Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, categorically denied the report, labelling it as fake news.

In a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, December 27, Ibe posted a screenshot of the circulating claim and wrote:
Fake news: Not on the menu!

The statement effectively refuted suggestions that Atiku had exited the 2027 race or entered into any political arrangement as alleged.

Political Context

The denial comes amid heightened political speculation following reports that Peter Obi is planning to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections. The developments have fueled discussions about possible alliances and realignments within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

As of the time of filing this report, Atiku has not issued a personal statement beyond his media team’s clarification, and no official announcement has been made regarding any coalition or withdrawal from the race.

Observers note that political manoeuvring ahead of 2027 remains fluid, with parties and key figures yet to make definitive declarations.
