The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports suggesting that the explosion recorded in the Mushin area of Lagos was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), confirming that investigations showed it was a mechanical failure.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, June 22, initially sparked fears among residents after speculation circulated on social media that it may have been a bomb attack.
However, speaking to journalists on Thursday, June 25, the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, said detailed investigations carried out by security agencies found no evidence linking the incident to terrorism or any form of explosive attack.
According to the police commissioner, forensic experts thoroughly examined the scene but did not recover any explosive materials or components commonly associated with bomb explosions.
He said investigators found no traces of explosive substances, detonators, explosive residues, initiation devices or any other evidence that would suggest the use of an IED.
Fatai explained that preliminary findings showed the incident was caused by the sudden release of pressure from a mechanical component located outside the affected vehicle.
According to him, the pressure generated during the mechanical failure shattered the front passenger-side glass panels of the vehicle.
The occupant of the vehicle sustained only minor injuries during the incident.
Following the outcome of the investigation, the Lagos State Police Command officially classified the incident as a mechanical explosion rather than an explosive attack.
The command assured residents that there was no indication of terrorism or any coordinated security threat connected to the incident.
Police also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified reports capable of creating unnecessary panic.
