The Redeemed Christian Church of God has responded to growing public criticism surrounding its General Overseer, Enoch Adeboye, denying claims that he cancelled a planned protest over insecurity and accusing critics of spreading misleading narratives.
In a statement released on June 2 through the church’s public relations platform, RCCG said recent comments and reports about Adeboye had misrepresented his actions and views on national issues.
RCCG Clarifies Protest Controversy
Addressing allegations that Pastor Adeboye halted a planned protest against insecurity, the church insisted that the narrative was inaccurate.
According to RCCG, Adeboye merely communicated a directive issued by the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria regarding the conclusion of a nationwide prayer programme.
The church explained that the original arrangement was adjusted by PFN and applied to all member churches across the country.
“Pastor Adeboye only communicated the instruction of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) to members of the RCCG on the updated plan to have the grand finale of the three-day prayer programme in a centralised venue and hold a rally around the venue. This was communicated by PFN to all churches under PFN in Nigeria,” the statement said.
RCCG maintained that the decision was not a personal directive from Adeboye and therefore should not be interpreted as a cancellation of any protest.
Church Rejects Political Allegations
The church also dismissed claims that Adeboye has publicly supported or campaigned for the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
According to RCCG, its leader has consistently maintained political neutrality and has never instructed members on which political party or candidate to support.
“Pastor Adeboye has always encouraged members of the church to get their PVCs and vote for anyone of their choice. He has always maintained a neutral stance on political parties as members of the church are members of various political parties,” the church stated.
Response To Criticism Over Insecurity
RCCG also responded to accusations that Adeboye has remained silent on insecurity, economic hardship and other national challenges.
The church argued that while the cleric regularly prays for the nation and speaks on issues affecting citizens, he does not possess executive authority over security agencies.
“Pastor E.A. Adeboye is the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and not the Commander of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He can only ask his members to join in prayers and convey instructions given by CAN/PFN with no direct influence over the Army,” the statement added.
Call For Responsible Public Discourse
The church urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it online and cautioned against attributing false statements or motives to its leader.
The clarification comes amid heightened public debate over insecurity, economic hardship and the role religious leaders should play in speaking out against national challenges.
The controversy intensified following widespread discussions on social media regarding the recent wave of kidnappings and attacks in different parts of the country, particularly the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
