FIFA has opened an investigation into allegations of racial abuse directed at popular content creator IShowSpeed during the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 fixture between Argentina and Cape Verde.
The alleged incident reportedly took place on July 3 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, where the 21-year-old internet personality was watching the match while livestreaming the event to millions of fans around the world.
According to reports, FIFA became aware of the alleged abuse after footage of the incident appeared during IShowSpeed’s live broadcast. Football’s world governing body confirmed that it is reviewing the matter and reaffirmed its commitment to combating all forms of discrimination.
In a statement, FIFA said the World Cup is intended to promote unity, diversity and mutual respect, stressing that discriminatory behaviour has no place in football.
IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., has been a prominent figure throughout the tournament, livestreaming matches and interacting with some of football’s biggest names. His broadcasts have featured FIFA President Gianni Infantino as well as several current and former football stars.
The American streamer is also widely recognised for his admiration of Cristiano Ronaldo and frequently creates content around the long-running rivalry between the Portuguese forward and Argentina captain Lionel Messi.
With more than 57 million YouTube subscribers and over 53 million TikTok followers, IShowSpeed has become one of the world’s most influential online creators in football, helping attract younger audiences to the sport through his live coverage and digital content.
FIFA said its investigation will establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged incident and determine whether disciplinary measures or further action are necessary.
