The controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun’s overturned FIFA World Cup suspension has intensified after FIFA Disciplinary Committee Chairman Mohammad Al Kamali declined to answer questions about the decision during the ongoing tournament.
Al Kamali refused to comment when approached by BBC Sports Editor Dan Roan ahead of England’s World Cup quarter-final clash with Norway, leaving unanswered questions over the disciplinary process that allowed the United States striker to feature in the knockout stage.
Balogun was initially expected to serve a suspension after receiving a red card for serious foul play during the United States’ Round of 32 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina.
However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee later suspended the punishment, making the Arsenal forward available for the United States’ Round of 16 defeat to Belgium.
The decision immediately sparked widespread debate, particularly after reports claimed that United States President Donald Trump and senior White House officials had contacted FIFA regarding the punishment.
During his attempt to obtain clarification, Roan asked Al Kamali whether FIFA President Gianni Infantino played any role in the committee’s decision to suspend Balogun’s ban.
He also sought an explanation for why England defender Jarell Quansah received a harsher punishment for what many observers considered a similar offence.
Al Kamali declined to respond to any of the questions before entering the stadium.
The controversy has grown further following Quansah’s dismissal during England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico.
The Bayer Leverkusen defender was sent off for a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo, with FIFA classifying the incident as serious foul play.
Unlike Balogun, Quansah received a two-match suspension, consisting of the automatic one-match ban and an additional suspension.
The contrasting decisions have fuelled fresh criticism over the consistency and transparency of FIFA’s disciplinary process during the World Cup.
Following the backlash over Balogun’s case, FIFA released an 871-word statement insisting that its disciplinary committee reached the decision after considering “all of the specific circumstances surrounding the incident and evidence available.”
However, the governing body did not disclose the evidence reviewed or explain what exceptional circumstances justified overturning the striker’s suspension, leaving many of the questions surrounding the case unanswered.
