Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called on the United Nations (UN) and international human rights organisations to investigate the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the incident as one that requires independent international scrutiny.
The governor made the appeal on Monday while addressing the public after receiving the rescued pupils and teachers at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, following their release after 56 days in captivity.
Makinde said the circumstances surrounding the abduction were too serious to be treated as an ordinary criminal incident, urging international accountability bodies to examine the facts surrounding the attack.
According to him, the incident raises concerns that deserve attention beyond Nigeria’s borders.
“The circumstances surrounding this incident are sufficiently grave and unusual to warrant independent scrutiny.
“I therefore, with a full sense of responsibility, as the Executive Governor of Oyo State, call on the appropriate international human rights and accountability mechanisms, including those within the United Nations system, to closely examine the facts surrounding these abductions,” he said.
The governor’s appeal comes after security forces successfully rescued the abducted pupils and teachers during a coordinated operation involving the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.
Military authorities disclosed that the rescue mission claimed the lives of some security personnel, while others sustained injuries during the operation.
Makinde commended the security agencies for their efforts in securing the victims’ freedom and reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring justice and strengthening the safety of schools and communities across the state.
His call for a United Nations investigation has added a new dimension to discussions surrounding the high-profile kidnapping, with many Nigerians awaiting further details on the circumstances that led to the abduction and the findings of ongoing investigations.
