The successful rescue of 44 pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has brought relief to Nigerians after the victims spent 56 days in captivity.
The victims, who were kidnapped on May 15, regained their freedom on July 10 following a coordinated military operation. The ordeal, however, claimed the lives of two teachers, one reportedly shot during the attack while another was beheaded in captivity, drawing nationwide outrage.
Although the rescue has been widely celebrated, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde says the matter should not end with the victims’ return, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the abduction deserve an independent investigation.
Speaking in a statewide broadcast after receiving the rescued victims in Ibadan, Makinde called on the United Nations, international human rights organisations and other independent accountability bodies to examine the incident.
“The reunion of these children and teachers with their families does not mark the end of this painful chapter. It marks the beginning of another responsibility, our collective responsibility to establish the truth.
“The circumstances surrounding this incident are sufficiently grave and unusual to warrant independent scrutiny beyond our domestic institutions.
“I therefore, with a full sense of responsibility as the Executive Governor of Oyo State, call on the appropriate international human rights and accountability mechanisms, including those within the United Nations system, to closely examine the facts surrounding this abduction and the circumstances of its resolution,” the governor said.
Makinde stressed that the proposed investigation was not intended to undermine Nigerian institutions but to strengthen public confidence through transparency and accountability.
“Such scrutiny is not intended to undermine our institutions. Rather, it is intended to reinforce public confidence that the truth will be established and that every person found to bear responsibility, regardless of office, influence or affiliation, will be held accountable.”
The governor argued that because national security falls under the constitutional responsibility of the Federal Government, Nigerians deserve a full explanation of how the kidnapping occurred.
“The Nigerian people deserve a full and transparent account of what happened, who was responsible, whether there were institutional failures, negligence or collusion at any level, and what measures must now be taken to ensure that no community is ever subjected to such an ordeal again.
“This is not about politics. It is about justice for the victims, reassurance for our people, and restoring public confidence that every Nigerian child can go to school without fear.”
Makinde also announced plans to strengthen security around communities bordering the Old Oyo National Park through tighter surveillance, improved intelligence gathering and stronger collaboration between local communities and security agencies.
Presidency Rejects Proposal
The Presidency has, however, dismissed the governor’s call for international scrutiny.
Reacting to the proposal, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga described Makinde’s position as a “crazy theory,” insisting there was no basis for suggesting the need for a UN investigation.
“What is our business with him? That is his opinion. The good thing is that those kids are out and the teachers are out, so whatever crazy theory he is reading into it, that is his own palava,” Onanuga said.
He questioned what the Federal Government would stand to gain from the prolonged captivity of innocent children and teachers.
“But what will any government or anybody profit from subjecting the children and teachers to such trauma for days?
“It will only take a very bad mind to be thinking the way he is thinking. The good thing is that those kids are out, the teachers are out, we lost one teacher, we lost soldiers, we lost Amotekun Corps and so on. So I think generally all over the country there is a huge relief that those kids, especially the kids and the teachers, are out.”
He added that anyone suggesting a conspiracy behind the incident was drawing conclusions without evidence.
- Political Debate Deepens
Makinde’s call has sparked fresh political debate, coming amid his increasingly strained relationship with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Supporters of the governor argue that an independent inquiry is necessary to establish the full facts surrounding the kidnapping, identify any security failures and recommend measures to prevent similar attacks.
Critics, however, view the proposal through a political lens, particularly as Makinde is widely expected to play a major role in the 2027 presidential election.
Despite the differing opinions, analysts say the governor’s proposal has shifted public attention from celebrating the successful rescue to broader questions about accountability, security lapses and preventing future mass abductions.
As discussions continue, the focus is no longer solely on how the victims regained their freedom but also on whether a comprehensive investigation will uncover the full circumstances surrounding one of Nigeria’s most disturbing recent kidnapping incidents.
