Nigerian lawyer Zaenab Olawunmi Adams, Esq., has formally complained to MTN Nigeria over what she described as the unusually rapid depletion of her 800GB annual data plan.
Adams, a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, said she purchased the annual plan for ₦125,000 on May 15, 2026, but had only 91.45GB remaining as of August 27.
According to the lawyer, MTN’s records indicate that approximately 708.55GB of her 800GB allocation had been consumed within about 104 days, leaving roughly 11.4 per cent of the original data allowance.
She said the rate at which the data was depleted was unusual, particularly because the subscription was an annual plan.
Lawyer Questions MTN Data Deductions
In a formal complaint addressed to MTN Nigeria’s customer care, Adams questioned the accuracy of the network’s data accounting and requested a detailed investigation into the deductions recorded on her line.
The lawyer said she had been an MTN subscriber since she was 10 years old and did not consider herself a heavy data user.
She explained that most of her internet activities were carried out on a single mobile device and mainly involved ordinary online activities.
“I do not use multiple devices on the line, I am not a gamer, and my ordinary internet usage is substantially limited to routine activities such as social media, messaging, browsing and other personal online activities on a single mobile device.”
Adams said the amount of data reportedly consumed raised questions that could only be properly addressed through a detailed technical and account-level review by MTN.
Lawyer Requests Complete Data Usage Records
The legal practitioner requested that MTN provide a detailed account of her data consumption between May 15 and August 27, 2026.
Among the information she requested are the date and time of each data-consumption session, the amount of data deducted during each session and a chronological record showing her data balance and deductions.
She also asked the telecommunications company to provide details of the applications, services, categories or destinations responsible for significant data deductions, where such information is technically available.
According to Adams, the requested information would enable her to independently reconcile the original 800GB allocation with the approximately 708.55GB reportedly consumed.
She said she wants to understand how the deductions occurred and determine whether the recorded usage corresponds with her actual internet activities.
Lawyer Demands Transparency From MTN
Adams described the extent and speed of the depletion as sufficient grounds for an immediate investigation.
She called on MTN to conduct a proper usage reconciliation and technical review of the account and provide a transparent explanation for the deductions.
At the time of her complaint, the lawyer said she was awaiting a response from MTN Nigeria and the detailed usage records requested.
The complaint, however, represents Adams’ account of the data usage and her concerns about the deductions. It does not establish that MTN incorrectly deducted the data.
MTN Nigeria has yet to publicly respond to the complaint or provide an explanation for the reported consumption at the time of publication.
