Taiwo Awoniyi Admits Coventry Must Improve Finishing After Hull City Defeat

Taiwo Awoniyi has admitted that Coventry City must improve their finishing after suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Hull City in their Premier League clash on Saturday.

Frank Lampard’s side dominated large periods of the encounter at the Coventry Building Society Arena but failed to convert their opportunities. Liam Millar eventually punished the hosts with the decisive goal in the 82nd minute.

Awoniyi was among Coventry’s biggest threats in attack. The Nigeria international came close to opening the scoring in the first half, but Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis produced an excellent save to deny him from close range. Awoniyi also headed another opportunity wide.

Reflecting on the defeat, Awoniyi acknowledged that Coventry controlled much of the game but failed to make their chances count.

“We did quite good in terms of having the ball but unfortunately they had that great counter-attack and they took their chance. It is on us to take our chances as well,” Awoniyi told Coventry media.

The striker also praised Tzolakis for his performance and stressed the need for Coventry to become more effective in front of goal.

“We just have to take our chances, as I said earlier. We didn’t take ours and they took theirs. It was a disappointing defeat for us.”

The result leaves Coventry without a point from their opening two Premier League matches following their return to the top flight. Hull, meanwhile, have made a perfect start with two wins from two games.

Awoniyi will now hope to help Coventry respond when they face Manchester City in their next league fixture.
