Nigerian social media activist VeryDarkman has warned phone dealers against excessively increasing the price of the newly released iPhone 18, saying he could help Nigerians purchase the device directly from China if local prices become too high.
VeryDarkman issued the warning in a video recorded in China, where he said he had visited an Apple Store and confirmed the availability of the new iPhone.
According to the activist, Nigerian phone dealers could use the launch of the new device as an opportunity to increase prices, a move he argued could also push up the prices of older iPhone models, including the iPhone 17.
He said he had already placed an order for an iPhone 18 in China and expected to receive it on September 18.
VeryDarkman also addressed dealers who might accuse him of interfering with their businesses, making it clear that he would intentionally intervene if he believed consumers were being charged excessive prices.
“I just reach Apple Store for China. iPhone 18 just come out, and I know una for Nigeria una go inflate the price. And you know the problem with you inflating the price is that the 17 now go come dey more expensive.”
He further said he would consider helping Nigerians purchase and bring the devices into the country if local dealers significantly increased their prices.
“Now like this, I dey China. I don order now. It’s going to come on the 18th. Una know me. Business people, una go talk say I wan spoil business for una. Una go hate me. But I go spoil am.”
He added:
“If I hear the price go up, I go help people dey buy dey bring am come Nigeria.”
The comments have generated discussion online, particularly over the pricing of newly launched smartphones in Nigeria and the difference between international launch prices and local retail prices.
VeryDarkman’s comments are currently a warning and stated intention, rather than confirmation that he has begun importing iPhone 18 devices for Nigerian consumers.
The price of the device in Nigeria is also likely to vary between sellers depending on factors such as the country of import, storage capacity, exchange rates, shipping costs, taxes, availability and retailer margins.
