Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Olu Jacobs has died at the age of 84, his family has announced.
His son, Olusoji Jacobs, confirmed the actor’s death in an Instagram post on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, describing him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
Olusoji also paid tribute to his father as “The Lion of Lufodo” while announcing his passing.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.”
He appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn the veteran actor.
“We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”
Olu Jacobs was one of the most prominent figures in Nigerian theatre, television and film, with a career that spanned several decades and extended beyond Nigeria.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and began his professional acting career in Britain, appearing in television productions and international projects before returning to Nigeria.
Jacobs subsequently became a major figure in Nollywood, appearing in numerous Nigerian films and earning recognition for his commanding performances and versatility.
His contribution to the entertainment industry earned him several honours, including the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival.
Beyond acting, Jacobs was also involved in film production and the development of the performing arts in Nigeria.
He and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, were closely associated with the Lufodo Group, which has been involved in theatre, film production and performing arts development.
Joke Silva had publicly celebrated her husband’s 84th birthday on July 11, 2026, describing him affectionately as “The Lion of Lufodo.” His death comes two months after that celebration.
The actor’s passing marks the end of a career that connected British television, Nigerian theatre and Nollywood, while influencing generations of actors and audiences.
Olu Jacobs is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, their children and grandchildren.
His family has asked the public and media to respect their privacy as they mourn his death.
