WhatsApp has reminded Android users of the minimum operating system requirements for accessing its messaging platform, meaning devices running older versions of Android may eventually lose support.
According to WhatsApp, the app currently supports Android devices running Android 6.0 and newer.
The device must also be capable of receiving SMS messages or phone calls, as these are required during the WhatsApp account verification process.
Android phones running operating systems older than Android 6.0 are not supported by the platform.
WhatsApp regularly reviews the operating systems supported by its app as newer technologies and security requirements are introduced. The company says ending support for older systems allows it to concentrate on devices capable of supporting newer features while maintaining the security and functionality of the service.
Users whose phones or operating systems are no longer supported are notified by WhatsApp, with affected users receiving reminders to upgrade their devices so they can continue using the messaging service.
The company also updates its support requirements as operating systems and technology standards change.
Android users who want to check whether their phones meet the current requirement can open their device’s Settings, look for About Phone or Software Information, and check the Android version installed.
Phones running Android 6.0 or later currently meet WhatsApp’s stated minimum Android operating system requirement, while devices running versions below Android 6.0 are not supported.
