A Nigerian woman has sparked reactions online after revealing that she personally returned her ₦30,000 bride price to her former husband, six years after it was paid.
The woman, identified as Ugwy Tessy on Facebook, said the bride price was paid to her family in February 2020 during her marriage.
According to her account, her former husband declined to collect a refund from her parents after their marriage ended.
She subsequently decided to return the money herself and shared a screenshot of a transaction showing that ₦30,000 was transferred to him on September 9, 2026.
Tessy did not disclose the circumstances that led to the end of the marriage in the post.
Her decision to return the money has generated a wide range of reactions on social media, with commenters debating the meaning of bride price, marital separation and who should be responsible for returning it when a marriage ends.
One Facebook user, Uju Angel, expressed support for the woman and claimed the marriage had been difficult for her.

Another commenter, Okeyson Ebe, appeared to suggest that the former husband was known to him, while other users focused on the amount returned and the circumstances surrounding the marriage.
Some commenters also questioned Tessy’s age at the time of the marriage, based on information they inferred from her post.
