Human rights lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the reported attack on African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Idam described the incident as shameful and unacceptable, insisting that Sowore should not be subjected to violence or intimidation because of his political views, opinions or activism.
The lawyer made the call in a statement issued on Friday, warning that attacks against people for expressing opposing views undermine democratic values and the rule of law.
He said disagreements over political positions should be handled through lawful and peaceful means rather than intimidation, harassment or violence.
According to Idam, democracy depends on the ability of citizens to express dissenting opinions without fear of physical attacks or humiliation.
He also warned that allowing individuals or groups to take the law into their own hands could weaken public confidence in the justice system and encourage lawlessness.
Idam urged the police chief to ensure that everyone involved in the incident was identified and investigated, adding that those found culpable should face prosecution where sufficient evidence exists.
The lawyer further stressed that Sowore and members of his team were entitled to the protection of the law, regardless of their political beliefs or convictions.
The incident occurred on Friday at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti, where Sowore was reportedly involved in a confrontation with some individuals.
The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed that its operatives intervened after receiving a distress report and took Sowore to the Police Cottage Hospital, where he received treatment for minor injuries.
However, the command disputed reports that the AAC candidate had been kidnapped, describing the incident as an altercation. It also said Commissioner of Police Michael Falade had ordered an investigation to establish what happened and identify those involved.
Sowore and his team had earlier accused suspected political attackers of targeting them, while also making allegations concerning the involvement of the Department of State Services (DSS). Those allegations have not been independently established.
Idam’s intervention adds to calls for a thorough investigation into the incident and accountability for anyone found responsible.
