Legendary American singer Stevie Wonder has filed a lawsuit seeking to evict his former fiancée, Carmen Efferson, from a Los Angeles property she has allegedly occupied without paying rent for nearly 38 years.
According to court documents cited by TMZ, Efferson has lived in the property since July 1988 under an informal arrangement that was never documented in writing. The lawsuit claims she has not paid any rent throughout the period.
Wonder’s legal action reportedly followed several unsuccessful attempts by his team to gain access to the property for an insurance inspection over the summer. The singer’s representatives alleged that Efferson refused to allow them into the house, raising concerns about the property’s insurance coverage.
According to the lawsuit, Wonder’s lawyers subsequently issued a notice in July terminating Efferson’s permission to remain in the property. She was reportedly given until August 27 to vacate the house but allegedly failed to leave by the deadline.
The Superstition singer is now asking the court to order Efferson’s eviction. He is also seeking financial damages and reimbursement for legal expenses incurred in pursuing the case.
The lawsuit places the long-standing living arrangement between Wonder and his former fiancée before a court, with the judge expected to consider the claims and the relief sought by the singer.
Wonder, one of the most influential figures in American music, is known for hit songs including Isn’t She Lovely, I Just Called to Say I Love You and You Are the Sunshine of My Life.
