Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has reportedly reached an agreement in principle to become the next head coach of Germany’s men’s national team following the country’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 59-year-old is said to have held high-level discussions with senior officials of the German Football Association (DFB) in New York on Friday, with both parties making significant progress toward a final agreement.
Although key terms of the proposed contract have reportedly been settled, the appointment is still subject to an agreement between the DFB and Klopp’s current employers, Red Bull, where he serves as Head of Global Football.
In a statement, the DFB confirmed that negotiations with Klopp had progressed positively.
According to the federation, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke held detailed talks with Klopp regarding the national team role, with both sides expressing confidence that a final agreement can be reached once discussions with Red Bull are concluded.
Klopp is expected to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who reportedly stepped down after Germany’s elimination in the Round of 32 of the World Cup.
Reports indicate the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool boss is expected to sign a four-year contract, marking what would be his first managerial role in international football.
Since leaving Liverpool in 2024, Klopp has remained away from club management, taking up an executive role with Red Bull in January 2025 while also working as a television pundit during the ongoing World Cup.
The German coach has been linked with several high-profile jobs since departing Anfield, including speculation surrounding Real Madrid, although he previously dismissed those reports.
His longstanding relationship with DFB Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke, forged during their successful spell together at Borussia Dortmund, is believed to have played an important role in advancing negotiations.
