The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a stolen motorcycle following an alleged attack on a commercial motorcyclist in the Apata area of Ibadan.
Police spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said the arrest followed a tip-off from a concerned resident who reported that a passenger allegedly attacked an okada rider, Muhammadu Kamilu, with an iron hammer before fleeing with his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle.
According to the command, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) swiftly responded, arrested the suspect, identified as Shafiu Nuhu, and recovered the stolen motorcycle with registration number AJW 842 QU. An iron hammer believed to have been used in the attack was also recovered.
The police said Kamilu sustained injuries during the incident, while a passerby, Nathaniel Ibrahim, who attempted to assist the victim, was also injured. Both men were treated at a nearby hospital.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to operating as a lone robber who targeted commercial motorcyclists in Ibadan and surrounding areas.
Police said investigations are ongoing to determine his possible involvement in other crimes.
Commending the operation, Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga praised the Good Samaritan and residents whose information led to the arrest, urging members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information.
