Toke Makinwa Says Women Shouldn’t Rush Into Marriage In Their 20s

Nigerian media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has stirred conversations online after advising women not to rush into marriage in their 20s, saying the period should be devoted to self-discovery and personal growth.

Speaking during a recent episode of her podcast, Toke Moments, Makinwa said many women are still discovering who they are during their 20s and should avoid making major life decisions, such as marriage, too early.

According to her, the experiences, challenges and lessons encountered during that stage of life help shape a woman’s identity and better prepare her for long-term commitments.

“Women have no business getting married in their 20s… You don’t even know yourself yet,” she said.

Makinwa also claimed that many women who married at a young age later realised they had rushed into the decision.

She argued that some women who are still married would admit, if they were completely honest, that they would have approached the decision differently if given another opportunity.

“Those who did are regretting it now. Even those who are still married, if they are being honest, they will tell you that they shouldn’t have rushed it,” she added.

Her comments have since generated mixed reactions across social media, with some users agreeing that people should prioritise personal development before settling down, while others argued that the decision to marry depends on individual maturity, personal values and circumstances rather than age alone.
