Bokku Mart Faces Backlash Over Advert Accused of Making Tribal Slur Against Igbos

Bokku Mart faces backlash after a viral advert featured a controversial statement seen as a tribal slur against Igbos. Nigerians demand a public apology from the Lagos-based retail brand.

Popular Lagos retail outlet, Bokku Mart, has come under intense criticism after releasing an advert video alleged to contain a tribal slur against the Igbo community.

In the viral clip, a female promoter was seen showcasing various products available at the mart while encouraging Nigerians to shop there.

Lady’s Comment Sparks Outrage

However, a comment made during the advert has triggered widespread condemnation.

While displaying sachets of garri and beans, the woman was heard saying:

“You mean I can get beans and garri Ijebu at Bokku without any Omo Igbo cheating me?”

The remark, perceived as derogatory, quickly went viral across social media platforms, with many Nigerians describing it as offensive and tribalistic.

Social Media Users React

Online users flooded the comment sections, accusing Bokku Mart of promoting ethnic bias for publicity.

One user, @afrisagacity, wrote:

“So the @bokkumart media team created an advert labelling Igbos as ‘cheaters’? This is a disgusting attempt to exploit tribal tension just to sell products. Totally unacceptable.”

Another user, @GeneralSnow_, added:

“Bokku is owned by Adewale Adeyemi. Until he comes out to apologise for that insult against Igbos, they’re cancelled. You don’t stereotype a whole tribe and expect support.”

Calls for Apology

Many Nigerians have demanded a public apology from Bokku Mart, warning that such campaigns could fuel ethnic division.
