“Buying a Car for Your Girlfriend Shows You’re Rich” — Peller Responds to Backlash

Popular Nigerian content creator Peller has addressed the criticism trailing his recent decision to gift his girlfriend, Jarvis, a luxury Mercedes-Benz AMG car for her birthday, while buying a different car for his mother.

The TikToker made headlines after surprising Jarvis with the high-end vehicle shortly after the couple reunited following a public breakup. While many fans celebrated the romantic gesture, others took to social media to question why his girlfriend received a more expensive car than his mother.

Reacting to the backlash, Peller explained that public perception often twists genuine gestures. According to him, gifts given to mothers are usually seen as an obligation, while gifts to romantic partners are viewed as a stronger display of wealth.

He revealed that his mother had initially requested a Toyota worth about ₦9 million because of its low maintenance cost. However, he decided to go a step further by buying her a Hyundai reportedly valued at ₦20 million.

Peller noted that even if he had bought exactly what his mother asked for, critics would still have found reasons to complain.

“People Will Always Talk

Defending his actions, he insisted that buying his girlfriend a car was simply an expression of love, not competition or disrespect toward his mother.

In his words:

“Being rich is not by what you buy for yourself, or what you buy for your mummy.

If you buy it for your mummy they’d say it is out of pity because she don take care of you from small. She deserve am. That one na normal thing.

Buying your girlfriend a car is the best way to show people that you’re rich.

My mum wanted a 9 million Toyota because of maintenance, but I bought her a 20 million Hyundai instead.

If I had bought her exactly what she requested, people would’ve dragged me.

E come be like say na me be the first person to buy car for girl. Ordinary small car for my baby. I love my baby o.”
