A 300 Level university student, identified as Sunday Adamu Hussaini, has reportedly been stabbed to death by suspected criminals disguised as scavengers during a robbery in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, June 28, 2026, within MD Abubakar Barracks, Jibi, along the Dei Dei area of Abuja.
According to reports, Hussaini had returned from church service before deciding to visit a friend inside the barracks.
While there, he was reportedly taking photographs with his newly acquired iPhone 16 when the suspected attackers approached him.
The assailants allegedly demanded that he surrender the phone at knifepoint.
However, a struggle reportedly broke out as the student resisted the robbery, during which he was stabbed.
Residents at the scene quickly intervened and rushed the victim to a nearby hospital. Sadly, he reportedly died on the way before receiving medical attention.
One of the suspected attackers was reportedly apprehended by residents shortly after the incident and beaten by an angry mob.
When news spread that the victim had died, the crowd allegedly attempted to lynch the suspect before police officers arrived at the scene.
According to eyewitness accounts, officers fired tear gas canisters to disperse the mob and take control of the situation.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
The victim’s death was confirmed by a family member, Dan Sanni, in an emotional Facebook post.
“Gone too soon. Today, we lost my nephew, Sunday Adamu Hussaini. A 300 Level university student. A young man full of life. He went to morning service this Sunday with hope in his heart,” he wrote.
“He was meant to return to school tomorrow. Instead, while taking a stroll in the Dei Dei Police Barracks around 9:30 a.m., a criminal disguised as a scavenger snatched his phone.
“In the struggle, he was stabbed. And just like that, life left him in the cold hands of death.
“Ambitious. Gentle. Full of dreams. All cut short in one violent moment. Parents are shattered. Loved ones are devastated. A future is gone. Life, which once felt sacred, now feels stolen. Which way, Nigeria?
“Justice for him. End the violence. RIP, nephew.”
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over rising violent crimes and phone-related robberies in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, with many Nigerians calling for improved security and justice for the deceased student.
