Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of failing to take adequate steps to tackle insecurity, alleging that the governor’s handling of security contributed to the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in the state.
Fayose made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television while reacting to the kidnapping incident that shook Oyo State and resulted in the death of one of the abducted teachers.
According to the former governor, the state government should have been more proactive in preventing the security breach, arguing that governors have a crucial role to play in coordinating security efforts within their states.
“I stand by my words. Seyi Makinde was not proactive enough. The abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo is a problem caused by Governor Seyi Makinde,” Fayose said during the interview.
He further argued that although security agencies operate under the federal government, state governments are expected to provide the necessary support to ensure effective security operations.
“It is the responsibility of the state government to mobilise the police. It is also its responsibility to manage the security network in the state,” he added.
Fayose’s comments come in the wake of the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers by suspected bandits in Oyo State. The incident sparked widespread concern over the security situation in the state, particularly after one of the kidnapped teachers was reportedly killed
The attack prompted the Oyo State Government to introduce additional security measures in affected areas, including the declaration of curfews in several local government areas as authorities intensified efforts to secure the release of the victims and restore calm.
Makinde has previously maintained that his administration remains committed to improving security across the state through collaboration with security agencies and local security outfits.
