26-Year-Old Jailed After Attempting To Steal Police Armoured Vehicle

A 26-year-old unemployed man, Ebenezer Frimpong, has been sentenced to one month in prison after pleading guilty to attempting to steal a police armoured vehicle in Nkawie, located in Ghana’s Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

According to Adom Online, Frimpong, a native of Antwi Agyeikrom in the Atwima Mponua District, was arrested on April 15, 2026, after he allegedly took control of the police vehicle.

He initially pleaded not guilty when he first appeared before the Kwadaso Circuit Court on May 5, 2026, but later changed his plea to guilty during proceedings on Tuesday, July 21, after undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital found him mentally fit to stand trial, and the psychiatric report was subsequently presented before the court.

Presiding judge His Honour Jephthah Appau convicted and sentenced Frimpong based on his guilty plea.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on April 14, 2026, when General Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi, a police driver, was transporting an armoured police vehicle with registration number GP 1131 to a workshop for servicing.

While on the journey, the officer reportedly parked the vehicle near Nkawie Market to buy medication after developing a stomach upset.

Moments later, he allegedly spotted Frimpong driving away with the vehicle towards the Nkawie-Abuakwa-Kumasi Road.

An alarm was immediately raised, and with the assistance of officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the suspect was intercepted and arrested at Mim, near Abuakwa.

Before imposing the sentence, Justice Appau confirmed that Frimpong understood the implications of changing his plea.

The judge explained that the relatively short prison term was influenced by the fact that the convict was a young offender and had admitted guilt without prolonging the trial.

Police prosecutor ASP Albert Asagre had urged the court to sentence the defendant in accordance with the law after he changed his plea.
